The Final Pillar

Starting a portfolio career often comes from a desire for more freedom, fulfillment, and impact. A belief that, if given the chance, you could do more, better and have more flexibility.

Driven by this, many high performers step away from large organizations to pursue this path. However, without the right systems in place, it’s easy to recreate the same inefficiencies that spurred the very desire to escape in the first place.

So in this final newsletter on portfolio careers, I'm going to share my approach to running multiple businesses concurrently, to creating "space" to experiment with new ideas, all without sacrificing any more than you would from your normal 9 to 5.

As a short preamble to the full piece, I think about operations across three domains:

  • Communication
  • Project Management
  • Time Management

And within each of these areas, there are four levels of maturity. To keeps things interesting, let's call them: Seed, Sprout, Sapling and Sequoia.

The reality is, if you're interested in starting your own company, side-hustle, or the next big thing, you need to get hyper-efficient, turning your 1-day into the equivalent of 3 people. You can do this by reaching the Sequoia stage.

In this month's post, I share the tools I've experimented with and those that I continue to use today. This will give you a head start and de-risk a few of the operational decisions you need to make along your journey.

Ok, time to check out  Portfolio Operations and see you next month!
